Scorpion S5-VTS Tracker

The Scorpion S5-VTS is a monitored GPS tracker with ADR (automatic driver recognition). Each authorised driver carries a small ADR tag, and the tracker recognises when a valid tag is present on a journey. If the vehicle is moved without a valid tag, Scorpion’s monitoring centre can be notified. OJB Autocare supplies and fits the S5-VTS from £350. The Scorpion monitoring subscription is charged separately.

Consider this model if your insurer has asked for an S5 tracker, or if you want monitored tracking that can tell tagged journeys from untagged ones.

How driver recognition works

The tag stays with the driver rather than the car. When the vehicle moves and the tracker recognises a valid tag, the journey is treated as authorised. When it’s moved without one, the tracker can notify Scorpion’s monitoring centre. That notification is based on the vehicle being moved without a recognised tag, rather than on someone simply touching the car.

Because the tag is what makes a journey authorised, keep it with you rather than leaving it in the vehicle. Tags run on a battery: Scorpion notes that a flashing LED on the tag can mean the battery is depleted, and you can order replacement tags through Scorpion’s support service.

When to choose S5 with immobilisation

On the S5-VTS, ADR recognises a valid tag. Immobilisation is a separate Scorpion package. If you want the vehicle to need a valid tag before it will start, look at the Scorpion S5+ with immobilisation, which also adds remote restart prevention by Scorpion’s recovery team. Mention it when you enquire, and we’ll check suitability and quote the S5+ for your vehicle.

S5-VTS or S7-ALS?

Both are monitored Scorpion trackers with live location, journey history and the same app. Across its range, Scorpion separates them by driver recognition: the S5-VTS has ADR tags and the S7-ALS doesn’t. The S7 starts at a lower price and suits drivers who want monitored tracking without tags. If an insurer’s requirement names S5, an S7 isn’t a substitute.

Using the app

  • Check the vehicle’s current location and status
  • Look back over journey history
  • Choose which alerts you receive
  • Adjust privacy settings
  • Switch on garage or transport mode when the vehicle is in for work or being moved
  • Get directions back to where you left it

The subscription and what ‘lifetime’ means

Monitoring and app access are Scorpion subscription services, so the tracker needs an active subscription to do its job. Scorpion offers several terms, including a monthly payment option arranged by phone. Its user guide states a minimum term of twelve months. Current subscription prices are on our Scorpion trackers page.

Lifetime cover lasts for as long as you own the vehicle it’s subscribed to. It can’t move to your next car or pass to another customer. Keep your contact details up to date with Scorpion while you own the car. When you sell it, use Scorpion’s ownership-transfer forms.

Insurance and certificates

Scorpion lists the S5-VTS as a Thatcham S5 tracker. Thatcham states that certification doesn’t guarantee recognition by an individual insurer. Before booking, check the exact wording of your policy requirement, including the product, the category and whether active monitoring is needed. Scorpion’s installation certificate becomes available once the subscription is paid and activated. You can then download it from Subscription Management in your Scorpion account.

After a theft, a monitored tracker gives you and the police location information to act on. It doesn’t guarantee recovery, which depends on the circumstances and on police resources.
